RDG: Toni S. and Kenneth Walters Student Literacy Scholarship

Description

Dr. Toni S. Walters was influential during her Oakland University teaching career. As a tribute to her influence, a number of her former students celebrated her career and retirement by honoring Dr. Walters with gifts toward a scholarship bearing her and her husband’s names. With those gifts, and her own, Dr. Walters established an endowment for an annual tuition award benefiting students studying literacy.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • graduate student in the Department of Reading and Language Arts in the School of Education and Human Services or an undergraduate student studying literacy
  • minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2
  • an essay discussing how the candidate serves one’s community, emphasizing a commitment to ethnically and economically diverse communities in urban/metropolitan educational institutions
  • priority will be given to students who have demonstrated service in the field of literacy as an in-service or pre-service teacher either on OU’s campus or through community service
Please note since there is not an undergraduate Reading and Language Arts program currently, the committee has selected to use Reading courses on an applicant’s transcript as evidence of studying literacy when evaluating undergraduate student applications.
