    Mary Van Sell Scholarship

DescriptionThe Mary Van Sell Scholarship celebrates the contributions of Associate Professor Mary Van Sell. Professor Van Sell came to the School of Business at Oakland University in 1985, where she was an esteemed colleague in the business school and in the Women’s Studies concentration until her death from colon cancer in the early fall of 2000. Ms. Van Sell earned her Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Iowa, with specializations in Organizational Behavior and Research Methods and Statistics. In their acceptance of the Phyllis Law Googasian Award, for the advancement of women in higher education and Oakland University, on April 2, 2001, Professors Martha Zingo (Political Science) and Natalie Cole (English) noted the instrumental and unsung role Professor Van Sell had played in helping the Women’s Studies major become a reality. Professor Van Sell in many ways epitomized the spirit and ethics of Women’s Studies:
    • She was a tireless advocate for women’s issues and Women’s Studies, serving on multiple committees, including the first proposal committee for the Women’s Studies major that was approved in August of 2000.
    • Her scholarship often dealt with issues of women in the workplace, including studies of working women’s stress management and job satisfaction, as well labor analyses of teachers, nurses and technical/clerical workers. She was resilient and hopeful, surviving breast cancer and maintaining an attitude of strength and optimism throughout treatment when her cancer returned.
    • She had a vision for Women’s Studies that extended beyond herself and the present, and helped put this vision into action through her generous bequest to the Women’s Studies program, so that despite the program’s loss of Professor Van Sell, the program would continue its positive contribution to students, faculty and the university.
Applicants must be Women and Gender Studies majors or minors with preference given to WGS majors. Applicants must have taken at least two courses in Women and Gender Studies at Oakland University by the time of the application for the scholarship. Applicants are required to have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and a minimum of 3.5 in WGS courses. Contact the WGS office for transcripts.

In addition to the application form, applicants are required to submit a 1-3 page double spaced, typed statement in 12 point font describing their interests in, and commitment to, Women and Gender Studies and feminism, and how WGS and feminism are connected with their lives. Applicants are to submit the names of two professors who have agreed to consult with the award committee regarding the applicant. Evidence of service to WGS or other feminist organizations and/or endeavors also will be considered. Service details should be included in the statement above.

Applicants are required to establish need for the scholarship. The applicant must qualify for financial aid at OU using the free application for Federal Student Aid and provide evidence with their application.
