Richard Burke Lecture: Renowned author and political thinker Michael Walzer, Ph.D.
4/10/2014, 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Renowned author and political thinker Michael Walzer, Ph.D., will present Oakland University’s 2014 Richard J. Burke Lecture in Philosophy, Religion and Society at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10 at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.

Dr. Walzer’s talk, “Ideas of Peace in the Hebrew Bible,” will feature a critical analysis of six biblical passages, from Deuteronomy, Kings, and Isaiah, each offering different ideas of what peace means and what a peaceful world would look like.

A professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study, Dr. Walzer has written on a variety of topics in political theory and moral philosophy, including political obligation, just and unjust war, nationalism and ethnicity, economic justice and the welfare state. His work has appeared in prominent publications such as the New Republic, the New York Review of Books, the New Yorker, the New York Times and Harper’s Magazine.

In addition, Dr. Walzer has served as editor of the political journal Dissent for more than three decades. He is the author of more than 25 books, including “Just and Unjust Wars” (1977), “On Toleration” (1997), and “Arguing About War” (2004). His most recent book, “In God’s Shadow: Politics in the Hebrew Bible” was published in 2012. He is currently working on international justice issues and on a collaborative project focused on the history of Jewish political thought.

Richard J. Burke, Ph.D., was the first faculty member hired at Oakland and taught at the university for 46 years. He established an endowment for the annual Richard J. Burke Lecture Series in Philosophy, Religion, and Society, which has brought prominent social philosophers to campus, including Daniel Dennett, Peter Singer and Richard Falk.
