The Macomb-OU INCubator is pleased to announce their newest tenant client, MangoTree Capital, LLC (MTC). MTC is a Registered Investment Adviser* firm launched in June 2012 offering investment advice and portfolio management. MTC's mission is to provide stable and enjoyable investment experience by integrating client goals with disciplined portfolio management while maintaining maximum account transparency through client account custody at an independent broker/dealer. They consider risk management and return equally important in pursuit of growth and income of assets.

Josh Linkner To Be Next Fireside Growth Series Speaker

Mac-OU INC presents Josh Linkner as the next Fireside Growth Series Speaker on September 5, from 5-7 p.m..

Josh Linkner is, overall, an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and author. He is a four-time tech entrepreneur; the Founder, Chairman and former CEO of ePrize, the largest interactive promotion agency in the world; the New York Times Bestselling Author of 'Disciplined Dreaming: A Proven System to Drive Breakthrough Creativity;' CEO and Managing Partner of Detroit Venture Partners; Adjunct Professor of Applied Creativity at the University of Michigan; and a regular contributor to Inc. The Fireside Growth Series is a chance for entrepreneurs to tell their story, in a "been there" and "done that" type of fashion. Lean Diversification Green Belt a Success

The Lean Diversification Green Belt Certificate, as a part of the OU Lean Diversification Program, concluded its spring 2012 run at Mac-OU INC this Thursday, June 28. Participants within the program gained the ability to tackle targeted concerns within a company's value stream or operations, to apply Lean principles to focused areas of the business and to recommend ideas for culture change.

This program is meant to provide your company with the tools necessary to make strategic decisions about diversification, to help your leadership and staff learn to align resources for the best potential success and to stress a mindset of of continuous improvement and a respect for the roles of people throughout an organization.

Maker Faire Detroit

BBC Presents: SBIR/STTR Proposal Preparation for DoD/DoE

This agency-specific seminar, taking place at Mac-OU INC on August 8, presents essential information for crafting a competitive SBIR/STTR proposal that meets the unique requirements for the Dept. of Defense and Dept. of Energy. It provides detailed instruction on the ins and outs of preparing a proposal, including both technical and commercialization plans, and navigating the often complicated submission process.

If you are a technology-based entrepreneur or small company seeking funding for R&D with plans to submit a SBIR/STTR proposal within the next 12 months, this is the seminar for you.

Boeing Partnership Forum 2012

In collaboration with the Detroit Regional Chamber's Connection Point and Velocity, the Boeing Partnership Forum took place at the Center on June 25. This Forum created the perfect opportunity for Boeing to explore the various partnerships that could exist between them and Michigan small businesses.

A panel discussion included topics such as how to do business with Boeing, as well as current and future projects. In addition, different companies had the opportunity to engage with representatives from Boeing's Seattle and Los Angeles-based Defense, Commercial and Global Research teams.


Beet Analytics Technology wins Innovation Award at the Great Lakes Entrepreneur's Quest (GLEQ) Business Plan Competition Award Ceremony

A big congratulations to Beet Analytics Technology, winner of the Automation Alley - Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Award!

This award, totaling $12,500, was a part of the GLEQ's 12th Annual Statewide Business Plan Competition Award Ceremony at Entrepreneur Connect 2012 at the James B. Henry Center on the Michigan State University Campus.

Brar Technology Garden Flourishes

It is one month into tenant client, Gurdev Brar's, of Brar Technology, Inc., gardening excursion, and his plants are coming along as planned. With the exception of a couple tomato plants that were lost to a couple of lucky rabbits, Gurdev feels his crops will be ready to produce in another three weeks. We are looking forward to later in the summer when we can enjoy all these fresh vegetables!

In August of 2011, Andrea began working for Oakland University at the Anton/Frankel Center as a temporary office assistant, which continued through March of 2012. Andrea is now the newest addition to the Mac-OU INC team. In her words, "I am thrilled to be a part of the Macomb-OU INCubator now, and look forward to many rewarding years with the organization!" She is currently attending Macomb Community College - "I am trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!"

Favorite Pastime: "I spend my free time enjoying my family, home and garden. I have one adult daughter who has just relocated to New York City, two sisters in the Detroit area, another in Phoenix, Arizona, and a brother who lives on the south Jersey shore. We are a sports family, focusing on baseball, football (preferably college-level) and hockey."

Last Book Read: "I am an avid reader, with legal thrillers being my favorite. Most recently, I read 'The Help,' which was a wonderful read!"

Favorite Food: "We are a family that loves to experience food. While eating one meal, we are planning the next. My brother is an amateur chef, and I am a 'wannabe.' I love shopping the markets to host family meals, along with dining out. I will eat almost anything, but carbs are my downfall."

David Benjamin is Social Media Director and one of the original founders of SalesBasix, a Sales and Marketing e-Learning company based in Metro Detroit. As Social Media Director, David is responsible for all digital communications, disseminating company content, as well as sharing industry information. David creates written content for SalesBasix, and is responsible for creating Social Media modules for the company. In addition to his position at SalesBasix, David spends time indulging in a wide variety of gastronomic delights in, and around, the Detroit area. Gary Vanerchuk's book "Why Now is the Time to CRUSH IT" was an easy, quick read about how he grew his dad's local liquor store from a four million to fifty million dollar business in less than eight years.

The importance of developing his personal brand through social media is a core theme of the book and a driving factor of his success. He blogged, used numerous social media tools, and developed flavorful videos on Youtube about wine tasting. He credits the success of his videos to being 100% authentically himself. His reviews were always honest and unfiltered, even if the truth risked not always pleasing his audience. He is confident that this honest, authentic approach to social media helped ignite the growth of his business.

Vanerchuk also shares three rules that formed the underpinning of his business and life philosophy, and ultimately his success: "Love your family, work superhard, and live your passion". The majority of the book is focused on "living your passion". His first entrepreneurial endeavor, at a young age, was born out of his passion for baseball cards – a passion he cashed in on in a big way. Trust me, his childhood money making schemes went well beyond the proverbial lemonade stand! With his baseball cards banked and behind him, Vanerchuk moved into the "big leagues", cashing in on his passion and love for wine to help grow his father's business. He emphasized that if you follow your passion, and love what you do, that you will not even need or think about vacations; you will be too busy enjoying yourself. He makes growing a business (with a little help from the internet) sound stunningly easy, and fun to boot!

Even though Vanerchuk says that one of the rules for success is "working superhard", very little time is dedicated to this subject. Herein lies my concern with the book: it has the potential to lead a passionate individual down an unexpected path and gives the impression that little else is needed to achieve success. Having spent the past 15 years watching small businesses grow, it takes true grit. While passion is a very important element for growing a business, it's unlikely to grow a healthy one on its own. Vanerchuk's book (and its readers) would have benefited from a more balanced representation of his three rules and how they coexist to create success.
